Tokyo - Day 1 (Shibuya)

First day in Tokyo took us to Shibuya, a very energetic and "hip" part of Tokyo. Our guide promised that we might be seeing a lot of people (especially girls/women) in crazy costumes here on Sundays so we decided to check it out. In fact, there were not nearly as many crazily dressed people there as expected and the dresses were a bit out of the ordinary but not as strange as one might have imagined. Still, Shibuya was definitely no disappointment!

(Please note that to the stupid idea of 4k, we have no pictures of today, because the 4k thought that the second lens would be sooo much better than the standard one. Big mistake. However, we'll come back and add a few photos later.)

We started at the train station with the statue of Hachiko (you know, the dog? The story of this fellow is told in a film with Richard Gere). Around it it was not only extremely crowded but very loud, too: Large screens with advertisements at every building (at least one of them promoting something loudly), artificial bird sound, a man on a stage shouting something over the microphone, the traffic, the people. It is one hell of a noise! And of course there is the "Scramble", the famous big crossing in Shibuya where up to 10.000 people might change from one side of the road to another during one turn of the traffic lights.

From there on we continued to walk the streets and visited a few shops like Tower Records (CDs and DVDs, obviously), Loft (a department store) and of course Tokyu Hands - the store which has everything. Absolutely EVERYTHING. From pretty normal to really funny, crazy stuff. If you want to buy a souvenir, this is a very nice starting point!

Somehow time raced by very quickly and the day was already over. Not much sightseeing in the traditional tourist's way but still it was an interesting day!
